Mike Simmons with John Gilbertson
|

This weekend, William Elliott Whitmore was in town for the first time in almost 5 years. It was the first
time we’ve had the chance to go out since the birth of our daughter, Lemmy, six weeks ago. We took full
advantage, staying out far past when we’re usually changing diapers and feeding. It was great, but took its
toll. I was still tired Monday, so it was refreshing to meet two Iowa musicians making a name for
themselves around the country.
Mike Simmons and John Gilbertson are not strangers to Des Moines, in fact they have both lived here at
different times in their life; we even all went to the same Junior High! But now they call the road their home,
driving from show to show, performing where they can with whomever they can. Both have made
numerous connections across the country, so they seem to get a welcome reception wherever they end up.
We talk all about it and their upcoming album due out in September during the interview.
One of my favorite record stores ever, is Cheapo up in Minneapolis. Last weekend I was there with my
brother, and they sold us the Flaming Lips reissue of Soft Bulletin a week before it actually comes out. So I
was pretty excited to have that at the show, but the rest was up to Mike and John. They brought in some
killer albums, I left the show on a Ryan Adams kick, so it was the first thing I put on at the café this
morning. Here is what we played…
Flaming Lips – Soft Bulletin
David Bowie – Changes One
Beatles – Hey Jude
Ryan Adams – Easy Tiger
Ryan Adams – Heartbreaker
Ryan Adams – 29
Ryan Adams – Demolition
Dave Matthews Band – Big Whiskey
Jimi Hendrix – Live @ Berkeley
Bonnie Rait – Sweet Forgiveness
Neil Young – Rust Never Sleeps
Albert King – Live Wire Blues Power
