I’ve got 80/35 on my brain pretty much full time these days, I’m so excited to see Broken Social Scene and Poison Control Center. If the weather holds, this is going to be a sweet week of music for me; I kicked things off with The Wheelers on the show. I’d only heard of this Cedar Rapids band but hadn't actually heard them so I didn’t know what to expect, which is always a lot of fun. Like the Teddy Boys before them, The Wheelers proved that the 319 can rock.
This was The Wheelers first ever totally acoustic show. In fact they only brought electric guitars, so all four of them really had to switch things up in the studio when they were loaned acoustics. I thought the two songs we recorded turned out great, especially when you hear how drastically different they are from those on the album. Grab the songs now, they’ll probably be the only acoustic ones we’ll hear from the band. And listen to the interview, we talk about the new album and their recent tribute to Kim Deal.
It’s always great when the band and I share nearly identical tastes in music, it makes for great conversation. We talked everything from the Smashing Pumpkins and Michael Jackson, to the Silver Jews and the Beach Boys. We played music to match the talk as well. The mix was one of my favorites in recent memory; having a tribute to the King of Pop helped. Here is what we played…
Kings of Leon – Youth and Young Manhood Wilco – S/T Starflyer 59 – Gold Beach Boys – Smile Beach Boys – Friends Michael Jackson – Thriller Michael Jackson – Off the Wall Michael Jackson – Bad Mr. Lif – I Phantom Danielson – Tri Danielson Simon Joyner – Iffy Blonde Redhead – S/T Silver Jews – American Water Bongwater – Breaking No New Ground
