Mars Café celebrated its three-year anniversary in March; I’ve been working there for nearly all three of them so I
was excited. We had a whole weekend of events planned, including a performance from Flatform. The highlight for
me was definitely this special session we did with Dick Prall. I’ve wanted to have him on the show for the past
couple of years, so it was nice to finally get it done.
Dick is an Iowa native, but has called Chicago home for a while now. His album “Weightless” was released on Iowa
label Authentic Records and he still has a number of local connections, so he spends a lot of time in the state; we at
least like to claim him as one of our own.
As usual we met at the Sonic Factory Studio to record a couple of live songs, the session was very quick and simple,
as Dick was already at the studio laying down demos for the new songs he’s working on. We talked all about the
new music during the interview, which was exciting because Dick had just recently quit his job and is making the
transition back to full time touring musician.
We were fashionably late by the time we arrived to the café, and the place was already packed. Old Main supplied
the beer and I brought some of my favorite albums to share; Dick came down recordless, so I brought in ones I
thought he might enjoy. We also made a list of records that he would have brought, if he had any.
Here is what we played…
Raconteurs – Consolers of the Lonely
Andrew Bird – Nobel Beast
Broken Social Scene – Brenden Canning Presents
Poison Control Center – When The World Sleeps 7”
Rolling Stones – Exile on Main St.
Devendra Banhart – Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Mountain
*We played more albums, but they got lost in an Amsel Light
Here is what we would have played…
